The Challenge of Maintaining FDS and CFAST

December 23, 2016
The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) has been in the public domain for 16 years, and the zone fire model CFAST (Consolidated Fire and Smoke Transport) has been around, in one form or another, for nearly twice that long. While both are widely used and well regarded within the fire protection community, most end users do not fully appreciate the challenge of their maintenance and upkeep. Read More...

Simulating Hospital Evacuation

December 16, 2016
In hospitals, evacuation of those with severe movement impairments can be highly problematic – for the patients, for the staff and for the other evacuees. It is critical to understand the performance of horizontal and vertical evacuation strategies, including the means by which people with reduced mobility can be assisted in stair descent. The work presented herein quantifies the performance of trained hospital staff in evacuating people with reduced mobility and specifies algorithms to explicitly represent the dynamics of these devices within evacuation models. Read More...

FEMTC 2016: Circulation, Ingress, and More

September 13, 2016
Circulation movement is often a critical part of the analysis for high occupancy areas with lots of foot traffic. As research and technology improves, engineers are adding non-evacuation investigations to their résumés. Jennifer Wiley, a Fire Protection Engineer at Jensen Hughes, will discuss these other uses for people movement models at the Fire and Evacuation Technical Modeling Conference (FEMTC).  Read More...

New Visualization for Fire, Smoke, and More

September 7, 2016
We are currently developing new visualization for many fire and smoke effects that are needed for both fire and evacuation modeling. Much of this is driven by a need to integrate evacuation results with fire and smoke visualization, along with other representations of FDS data. The intention is to provide an alternative to Smokeview for PyroSim as well as all new capability for Pathfinder. We are aiming to deliver easy to use camera manipulation, high frame rate visuals, and video capture with many options among other features.  Read More...

Te Papa Museum Investigation at FEMTC 2016

August 31, 2016
The Fire and Evacuation Technical Modeling Conference (FEMTC) is fast approaching, and several abstracts have been selected. Kevin Weller, a Fire Engineer at Beca, is joining many others in more than two days worth of technical presentations. Kevin will be presenting the challenges and discoveries of investigating the safety of a twenty year old museum. Read More...
