Hospital Evacuation using Pathfinder

February 27, 2017
Emergency evacuation of a hospital requires assistance for patients with reduced mobility. During the Fire and Evacuation Modeling Technical Conference (FEMTC) 2016, Aoife Hunt gave a talk entitled Simulating Hospital Evacuation in which she described an extensive set of experiments to evaluate assisted evacuation using a stretcher, a carry chair, an evacuation chair, and a rescue sheet. The experimental data was then used to predict evacuation times for an entire floor of a hospital under different staffing and assist device scenarios. In this post, we use Pathfinder to replicate two of the evacuation simulations that she calculated using buildingEXODUS.  Read More...

Advanced Simulations For Building Design – Best Practice and Future Developments

January 26, 2017
Advanced simulations are becoming a common approach for dealing with complex fire safety problems. The use of specially developed software for fire and evacuation modeling allows fire safety problems to be solved in a way that was not possible just a few decades ago. Read More...

The Challenge of Maintaining FDS and CFAST

December 23, 2016
The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) has been in the public domain for 16 years, and the zone fire model CFAST (Consolidated Fire and Smoke Transport) has been around, in one form or another, for nearly twice that long. While both are widely used and well regarded within the fire protection community, most end users do not fully appreciate the challenge of their maintenance and upkeep. Read More...

Simulating Hospital Evacuation

December 16, 2016
In hospitals, evacuation of those with severe movement impairments can be highly problematic – for the patients, for the staff and for the other evacuees. It is critical to understand the performance of horizontal and vertical evacuation strategies, including the means by which people with reduced mobility can be assisted in stair descent. The work presented herein quantifies the performance of trained hospital staff in evacuating people with reduced mobility and specifies algorithms to explicitly represent the dynamics of these devices within evacuation models. Read More...
